At the NYPH10 theater, St. Ann s Warehouse the six photographers who travelled to New York to help with the show, had to performe these days. We devided one theme into three shows.
1. From idea till book with Wytske van Keulen and Petra Stavast, who told about how they started with their projects, how they got their idea and about why it was important for them to make a book about it.

2. How to finance your books with Rob Hornstra, who told about the start of his first book for his final exam. He wanted to make a book but didn't know how to finance it, so his first marketingplan came up.

3. How to start with a photobook as a young photographer with Boudewijn Bollmann, Daan Paans and Willem Popelier. They were interviewed about their first projects, but mostly about they projects their working on right now: a new twisted streets #9, a project about the border of Slovakia and a book which was released with 3 copies of a special edition and will be released next week in Holland xxx & Willem.

It was great to notice that the audience really was interested in the things they told. After the performance there were people coming to the photographers to ask more questions or came to the DutchDoc!Space show to ask more about the books they made.

David C. Walentas, probably the riches man of Dumbo, Brooklyn New York showed photographer Bollmann around in his 20 million dollar building.
It is well-known that in the States everything is bigger than big. I met a man yesterday near Brooklyn Bridge who stands for this cliché. His name is David. He was sitting in this lunchroom eating lunch. I fell for his awefull white sportshoes, his Levi's 501 and leather jacket, and went to him.
I found out that this man is a real estate developer, no, the developer of Dumbo, the space between Manhattan- and Brooklyn Bridge. He owns a skyscraper with his own name on it and if I wanted he could show me. And he did....

Bollmann is an adventurer who is telling his stories through images. Read more about this story on a Dutch blogviceland (In Dutch only) and take a look at his website .

Behind the scenes of a photofestival

'Lou Reed Books Do Not Touch' Photo: Marga Rotteveel
'Lou Reed Books Do Not Touch' Photo: Marga Rotteveel
The day after the opening curator Marga Rotteveel found this chair with the label on it: 'Lou Reed Books. Do not touch.' It is funny to find out how such things work at the a New York Photo Festival.
The opening of the festival had a delay of an hour or so. We found out later that there were some problems with the ceremony with Lou Reed, one of the leading curators in it. The day of the opening, late in the afternoon, Reed got a little angry and told the staff the program had to be different. It took obviously a lot of time.

And it was not just that. Of course it is interesting from marketing perspective, to have a big name on the show and at the opening ceremony, but for the organisers it is not nice if this person drills you around and looks or stoned, or drunken, or ill in the evening. Reed could hardly say anything and if he did, he talked very slowly and didn't say anything really.

It is a shame for the staff. The organisers of the festival and the volunteers work so hard, theay are really dedicated to the festival and, most important maybe, they are really kind and helpfull.

Sticking posters on the wall and tear it off again

Sticking posters at night
Sticking posters at night
Photographer Rob Hornstra wanted to do something special: he hanged his Sochi Projectposter at Brooklyn walls in the middle of the night. Illegally. It was beautiful. They were hanging right in the center of the Photo Festival and it got noticed immediately.

Also the 'wallinspectors' noticed it right away and they phoned angry to the organisers: "you have to jerk them off again! Otherwise you have to pay a 1000 dollars fine!"

So, with a small team, at daylight, Hornstra jerked them off again. And he made an event out of it: the team got photographed gazillion times.

One of the activities in the show is to make a book yourself out of the exposed books. You even can do a workshop for it. You need a copier for that of course. We were waiting for two days. Well, not only waiting, but also asking when the thing would arrive. Today two men came and they brought a beautiful copier. Daan Paans made a nice picture of it.

Comedy in Dumbo Brooklyn NY

The ladder which leads to a place with a living room and a bedroom. Photo: Willem Popelier
The ladder which leads to a place with a living room and a bedroom. Photo: Willem Popelier
There are many stories to tell about one day in Brooklyn New York. It's if some scenes of a comedy are playing right in front of you. It is really hillarious to see a Jewish newly wed couple walking by through the artspace and says 'Hello' and in the meanwhile the cateringservice is building up everything for the same wedding. It is the same place where we are working to make the exhibition work. But the most funny part was a guy.
A guy in a Wallstreet suit comes into our room and says "hi". He walks further into the officespace of the gallery. Here 2 people are working behind their computers. The first day we came here, we noticed a strange hole under the roof, it's an attic. A ladder leads to it and we were really curious of what it would be. We thought it would be a place to play for the three cats who live here. We were very suprised that the Wallstreet guy climbs up this ladder.

When he got down again we asked him what the place was. To our suprise he told us he was sleeping there for a couple of nights. We found out that the place not only had a bed, but also a living room. And friends could stay over for a while.

On the skype at headquarters. Photo: laptop Annelies Kuiper
There are only 4 miles between the place where we live this week and the artspace where the show is. Because of the drilling and dust, we decided to make office at home for two days. But we have to communicate about things and the distance is to big to yell to each other, the cellphone is way to expensive. So we re-discovered skype. It works really well!

The search for paper rolls

Paperrolls. At the end of the day we found them. Photo: Marga Rotteveel
Paperrolls. At the end of the day we found them. Photo: Marga Rotteveel
We've been working all day long to put the show up. The atmosphere is great, although there are some tough things to handle. Walls that are a hundred years old and as hard as steel. A drill that only can handle wooden walls. A couple of hours waiting time for a drill from a really nice guy from Jersey. But these are minor details. One thing was really tough.

For example: We needed to have big rolls of paper for the show. But where do you find paper?
But where do you find paper? In the Netherlands we surfed the internet for hours, we googled every term we could think of but we didn't really find a trustworthy place. We wrote e-mails to our friends of Fotofestival, but nobody knew the right answer. We had to wait until we arrived in New York.

Gumchewing girl
At the Galapagos artspace they know more: two addresses in Manhattan. So we phoned with our question. Because in Europe we work with centimeters where in the States people use inches it was to difficult to find out by phone. So we went to the store. Once we got there we were devestated by the way they treated their customers. A gumchewing girl with a bored look on here face helped a client who had a big piece of cardboard. She asked the girl if it would be possible to cut it in half so it would be easier to transport. An irritated sound came back. "Costs 8 dollar," she said when she was chewing and chewing. The client reacted suprised: "You're kidding!" The girl got more irritated, chewed even harder and made a statement that that the costs are for labour and: "oh yeah, you can pick it up tomorrow morning."

Look further
The customer did it, what else could she do, but it was hillarious. We didn't have more succes. The guy on the phone forgot to take a look at the paper as he promised. The girl wasn't helping at all. A stupid discussion started till I had it and pushed my colleague out of the door and said to the girl that the guy could look further, but that we didn't have time anymore. The girl for once in the half hour we were there, stopped chewing and looked at me with big eyes. I didn't wait to see her chew again.

It's a mess, but we believe in it!

Tables, tools, flowers, dust in Galapagos. Photo: Willem Popelier
Tables, tools, flowers, dust in Galapagos. Photo: Willem Popelier
Okay. If you think you have everything under control for a show, because of the existence of internet and the possibilities to communicate with the whole world, you are wrong. We thought we arranged everything: a nice clean artspace in the centre of DUMBO Brooklyn NY. It is a nice artspace, that's for sure, but clean? No.
It was of course nice to meet the owner and director of Galapagos, they are really kind people. They are also a little chaotic it seems. Last week they had a visit of the firedepartment, so they didn't have time to clean it up. Tables, tools, flowers in cans, bikes, paint and lots of dust are in this room. That's not good for white paper.

They promised us that it will be cleaned today, but till afternoon nothing was moved yet. Exiting! But nothing to worry about. We have four young men from Holland here, so if they don't do it....

Read tomorrows blog for result!

DutchDoc!Space meets Galapagos

The Galapagos artspace in front of the Brooklyn Bridge. Photo: Willem Popelier
The Galapagos artspace in front of the Brooklyn Bridge. Photo: Willem Popelier
In the cultural community DUMBO in Brooklyn NY there is a nice place called Galapagos . No, it's not an island, it's a new artspace, a kunsthalle. It opens in the fall 2010, but opened the doors for DUTCHDOC!SPACE during the New York Photo Festival .
Galapagos calls itself kunsthalle, because it's not really a commercial artgallery or a museum with a collection. It will be a place where especially young artists can show their high quality work without commercial concerns. The commercial part seems the place underneath the artspace, also called Galapagos, where they earn some money with renting the room for weddings, theatre, caberet etc.

It should be a place where all kinds of cultural events take place. That's the reason for the name Galapagos. The story is that Darwin found a big variety of species at the Galapagos Islands . That's exactly what the artspace in New York is trying to do: a rich variety of cultural species.
